Our articling program will help you to prepare for your career as a lawyer, give you the practical experience you will need to launch a successful career in law.  We provide a great deal of flexibility which will allow you to chart your own unique path throughout your professional life.

Our objective is to prepare you for the practice of law and grow you as future leaders of this firm.  Articling students learn about the practical aspects of the practice of law – an experience you will not have received while attending law school but an experience which is still just as important as the formal education you receive.

Contact us for current opportunities available via email at hr@stringam.ca.

Contact us for current opportunities available via email at hr@stringam.ca.

Contact us for current opportunities available via email at hr@stringam.ca.

The firm will make every effort to ensure that all of the requirements of Alberta’s CPLED program are met or exceeded.  As principals under the program, we will make best efforts to ensure that each of our students understand the program and its policies and will also foster and facilitate the students complete compliance with the policy.  For additional information on the program, we encourage students to review the Articling Handbook as provided by The Law Society of Alberta.

Stringam LLP offers significant diversity of choice and we seek to accommodate individual preferences within specific practice areas so as to provide a rich and rewarding experience as well as satisfying all of the requirements of the articling program.  Our students gain real life experience while gaining a broad base of knowledge and understanding across many practice areas which prepares them for a future career in law.

Students at Stringam LLP will have an opportunity to work on a variety of matters.  You will have the opportunity to draft pleadings, commercial and residential real-estate agreements, memorandum of law and legal opinions, participate in preparing and arguing motions, attend discovery and mediation, attend closings, and participate in trials and other court appearances.  You will also have an opportunity to meet with and develop client relationships.

During every rotation, our students will work under the supervision of a designated lawyer who practices in the particular area.  It is the responsibility of the designated lawyer to ensure that the student receives a variety of work, guidance and instruction so that each student is provided with a balance of work opportunities during their articling year.

Compensation and benefits package for our articling students is competitive within our local market.  All of our students are covered by Alberta Health Care program and have the opportunity to participate in the firms extended medical, dental, and life insurance programs. A majority of our new lawyers are hired as prior participants.

As a student, you will need to consider all of your options and working preferences before making a decision to join us.  Where would you prefer to work?  What type of law do you want to practice?  Do you prefer a growing boutique practice like ours or is your preference to work for one of the national law firms?  Considering these types of questions is critical before you actually begin the application process.

Students should also consider any imposed application deadlines which may be set by provincial law societies or local customs.  Our law firm is not restricted by any particular application process but we do recommend students apply prior June 30th following the conclusion of their second year, with a completed application package addressed to the attention of our Articling Committee.

While we welcome applications which take on a variety of formats, we do recommend that when applying to our articling program you include the following information upon initial application.  Doing so will ensure that the members of our Articling Committee receive all of the relevant information necessary to assess each application on its merits.

The cover letter is a student’s first and often the most memorable of all the information received.  The impression which a cover letter can leave, is often the difference between just an interview or an offer.  Many interviewers will see the cover letter as the student’s first writing sample and so it is imperative that the letter be flawless. Take the time to be clear and concise in your letter, providing introductory information, what your interests are, why you feel you are suited for our firm including any qualities or achievements you feel support that position.  When addressing your letter, describe why you are interested in our firm including make references to what is unique about our firm which then demonstrates why we should be interested in you as a student.  Be sure to limit your cover letter to one page and remember to address it to the correct person.

A resume is your calling card and should tell us almost everything we need to know about you and give us enough information about why we would want to hire you including what experience you bring to our firm.

Always try to write a resume which reflects on the experience you feel will have value to our particular practice.  Focus on the experience which is most relevant to the position and consider only including that experience.  Keep your resume to a minimum of two pages if possible.  Try not to include very possible detail of experience if your resume is likely to exceed the two page limit.

Your resume should be error free.  As with a cover letter, resumes are often looked to as writing samples and so expect it will be considered as such.  Format your resume to at least include:

  • Education – post secondary including majors or concentrations
  • Employment Experience – in particular a focus on experience which might have relevance to the opportunity.
  • Legal Experience – where significant, consider listing this experience in a separate category.
  • Academic Awards, Extracurricular Activities and Interests.

Students may wish to also include a list of references who are able to highlight the particular abilities the student has.  These should be listed at the end of your resume including information we may need to contact these individuals.  For those students with actual reference letters, include these where appropriate at the end of the articling application.  When including actual reference letters, give consideration to whether they actually speak to your specific unique abilities or if generic – which does not add much value.

Writing samples are generally not read simply due to the fact that the recruitment process is so time consuming.  Only include writing samples if they are specifically requested.

Students should include all post-secondary transcripts.  If there are significant gaps in your education including an explanation in a cover letter will have value to the interviewer.

Unlike most major metropolitan regions, Lethbridge is not restricted by any regulatory or industry specific agreements with respect to setting in-firm interviews.  However, as noted in the application process, we do expect to contact student interested in our articling program on or about June 30th shortly after the student has completed their second year.  The firm will always make every effort possible to respond to all interview inquiries regardless of whether the firm intends to interview or not.

All candidates who have been scheduled to interview can expect to spend between one to two hours with members of our Articling Program Committee.  Our process includes spending time with you asking questions about your resume and how your experience, abilities, qualifications, and interest fit with our firm.  Be prepared to answer those questions specifically as our firm is looking for candidates who fit well with what we are trying to achieve.  You will also be given an opportunity to ask us questions.  Take time and prepare in advance so that you can determine whether our firm meets your specific needs.

After the interview, you may have an opportunity to tour our facilities and meet other members of our firm.  Do know that regardless of our decision regarding your candidacy, we will reach back out to you and inform you of our decision as we respect and appreciate the time you have taken to meet with us.

Be sure that the firm has your current contact information so that the recruiting committee can reach back out to confirm the status of your application.

Important Tips for Students

  • Proofread your application, cover letter and resume before you send it out.  Consider having a friend or colleague do the same.
  • If your first name is uncommon, then indicate you are either a Mr., Ms., or Mrs.
  • Include your contact information on your cover letter and resume.
  • Always have an extra copy of your application package on hand.
  • Be yourself in the interview process.
  • Don’t be late for an interview.
We are delighted and encouraged that you are considering submitting your application to Stringam LLP for consideration into our Articling Program.
We look forward to meeting with you and getting to know about you and your future aspirations!
